Yes, finally! Thank you! As far as I know, this has never been asked…
The short-story:
I played in a stoner-rock/doom-metal band, in my early 20’s. There were a few Bob’s already in the New Haven scene. We all had nicknames. Crog, Captain, Reverend, Cuban Missile Crisis, Hacksaw, Bear, Snot, and so on… everyone but me.
I was dubbed Bob Doom by my writing-partner, to clear up confusion.
“I’m writing with Bob, tonight…”
“Bob? Bob who?”
“From the doom-project… Bob Doom.”
I actually remember the night I was told. I was setting up my gear and Crog let me know that I had a nickname. I thought, ‘hmm… that’s cool…’, then it stuck. For the past 6 years, people only know me by Doom. Even my family.
People started calling me Mr. Doom and I’d break their balls and request to be addressed by Dr. Doom. Here’s the worst part… the name was so intrinsically tied to my identity that I didn’t even realize the reference… for a long time.
Well, after a while, that too stuck. Now, it’s just a fringe benefit of a nickname I’m very happy to have.
